Homemade Playdough

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

Boo and I did something amazingly fun the other day: homemade playdough! There are about a jillion recipes on the Web if you do a search.. We used the one out of the Toddler’s Busy Book.

This was a ridiculous amount of fun, more than I expected. H had the brilliant idea to take some photos, so here’s a mini-selection of us in our PJs. First up: cooking! Did you know playdough was cooked? I know there are non-cook versions but I thought I’d make the one that lasts the longest, and that involves cooking.

Boo picked out the color: Yellow. He’s still into the reds, oranges and yellows these days. He doesn’t get to help with the cooking a lot, but I’m learning how to let him help safely. Here he’s stirring:

He got really carried away with the food coloring though! When we got to the part where I had to knead the really hot dough (ouch!) he went to wash his hands:

Here’s the dough all kneaded up. Seriously this stuff feels exactly like playdough but smells a LOT better. Color is better too.

And here’s us playing with it. We did some salt dough handprints and footprints for ornaments in December, so now he likes to make prints in playdough too. There’s something about squishing stuff through your toes that is just utterly fascinating!

Fun day, we’ll definitely be doing this again!

Singing and baking

Monday, January 15th, 2007

A few weeks ago, H was singing Nathan his first lullaby (with words that H made up), and when he finished, Nathan started singing. We weren’t sure quite what he was singing, but it was definitely singing. And when he stopped, he told H more! So H AND Nathan sang the lullaby.

We were floored! Our boy likes to sing!

He sings a lot now. Not on command and I’m never sure what exactly he’s singing, but he enjoys whatever it is quite a lot. The singing is often accompanied by Nathan’s favorite dance — swaying side to side. We hope to catch it on video someday soon.

In other news, Nathan loves to bake. In fact, he seriously loves the mixer. He loves it so much I have to keep it unplugged (he will often sit on the counter right by me as I’m doing things like heating up his nightly bottle of milk).

Well, the other day we were doing some baking so he was sitting on the counter “helping” me. The mixer was unplugged and we were adding various ingredients to it. I went to plug it in (keeping the boy well back in case you were worried) and BLAM! Sugar and butter went everywhere.

I forgot that the boy had been playing with it, and it was on high speed. Oops. Of course the Boo thought this was highly entertaining. I told him wait until Mommy does that with flour, as she is infamous for doing. It’ll come. Just wait.

Anyway, note to self, check the mixer’s settings before plugging it in!
